Two Years Of What Abeg?

“Good morning, my name is Funmilayo and I am calling you from Gotv”. Story of my life 8 am -5 pm for two years, well sometimes the script changed from “We wanted to find out why you haven’t subscribed for some time” to “we have a bonus for you from Gotv”’ As in e no boring at all ba?

After school I always thought my second-class lower degree would hinder me from getting job opportunities, I mean you can’t blame me as a Nigerian I have been programmed to believe I needed a first-class or second class upper to get a good job.

With this at the back of my mind, my job expectations were low into my service year and as my service came to an end in 2018 I was just one step away from having a breakdown.

“How would I do it?” “Babe if you see any job just take it like that ooo”, these were things I told myself when I fully hit the labour market. Well like the naïve chicken that I am I believed these words and took what I got.

I was super excited when I got a job on the island and the pay was well 45,000 naira not dollars don’t get it twisted abeg. I was coming from the outskirts of Berger on that salary, please help me run the math’s on how much I would be left with if I spent 1500 on transport every day for one month. Exactly I would be left with absolutely nothing!!!!!!!!! But my yeye self took the job regardless.

“Babe don’t look at the pay it’s just for the experience” this was the same line I kept repeating to myself for two good years. Well, here we are, I am a growth marketer and content developer, now I won’t say the experience is in the dustbin but I would just say I got something better.

I honestly don’t know why I just told that story, I just wanted to discuss why it is important to put yourself first and never settle for less. 2021 became my year of realization, I began to fully understand my self-worth and also discover new things I should have done a long time ago.

Writing has always been something I was interested in but I was limited due to laziness and my inability to take risks. The tech world is growing at an exponential rate in Nigeria and my crazy writing is required to bring my tech bros ideas to life and make them easy to understand.

For you to experience growth it is very important to know when to take a risk, there were other job offers as a customer care representative at different firms but I had to understand that what I wanted to do was put my ideas into words for people to read and not to sound like a broken record.

It is okay to take a step back and re-evaluate your decisions, it’s okay to make the wrong choices, it’s okay to fail and get rejected but do not fail to take a risk
